The idea of giving loyalty in exchange for benevolence may be referred
to as appropriate for pairs of relationships in various walks of life, and the
expression oyabun/kobun, or parent-part/child-part, is sometimes used to
describe such relations. It has been used for bonds between teacher and
pupil, master or mistress and apprentice, landlord and tenant, and, in particular, criminal and accomplice. Like the bond between parent and child, it implies that these relationships are expected to last, and the beneficiary
expected to consult and visit the benefactor even unto death if need be.
Evidently the family and the ideology associated with it has much in the
way of preparation for the world outside. More specific aspects of this
preparation will be presented in the chapter that follows
